To develop this, however, they needed to break free. With many businesses wary of putting all their data into one of the three big cloud providers (IBM, Amazon, Google), there was an opportunity to specialize in providing hybrid solutions, keeping confidential data locally while storing the bulk of data in the cloud. In 2019, then named Cogeco Peer 1, the team realized they could not be complacent. For more than 20 years, the group – functioning as a unit of a larger firm – managed customers’ critical data infrastructure, helping them maximize business outcomes with total solutions and tailored options. One such example is Aptum Technologies, the Toronto-based hybrid data infrastructure provider, now with around 450 employees working from 14 locations and serving customers in more than 70 countries. While the transition is challenging, the benefits can also be considerable and underline the special value of being midsized. The reasons for such splits are diverse and can arise from responses to factors that are negative (downward trends) or positive (growth opportunities). Midsized firms working overtime on growth should take heart from spin-offs, divisions within larger corporations that opt to strike out on their own. That may not be the best route for maintaining a cutting edge. Large corporate structures may offer resources, but they also bring constraints – prioritizing the parent’s priorities over divisional interests, adding bureaucracy and complex decision-making, diffusing product specialization and trading customer attention for mass client base. Big companies often fail to do so.Īmid the desire for scale, there is a case to be made for celebrating the benefits of a mighty midsized company. Growing a company is clearly a desired end result, but building a powerful team delivering quality product and absolute customer satisfaction is what delivers that result. Ambitious midsized firms often have size envy – jealous of big corporations with more money, more leaders, more reach, and convincing themselves that big is better.
